An exacta is a bet type where you must select runners to finish 1st and 2nd in correct order. If they run 1st and 2nd but not in correct order the exacta bet will not stand. An exacta is a pari-mutuel bet type. The dividend for an exacta bet is determined by the size of the betting pool and the number of winning unit holders.
A box exacta is where the bettor can select any number of horses to finish 1st or 2nd and the runners can finish either 1st or 2nd. The catch is that a box exacta costs more than a normal exacta bet. If the bettor selects 3 horses for the exacta, the cost of the exacta bet will be $9 (3 x 3 = 9).
The example shows an exacta bet where the bettor has taken the 1st placegetter one out and then 5 selections for 2nd place. For the exacta bet to be successful, Black Caviar must win and then one of the other 5 selections must finish 2nd.
